While these concepts are nice artworks, they bring nothing new to the old concept (except for the app-tagging idea - but isn't that a bit like what we have in recent Linux distros' Start menus?). We need something that will fix the age old problem with all WIMP concepts of GUIs - micromanagement of all those windows and objects. In fact, all GUIs in today's OSes stand between the user and the job that needs to be done. We spend too much time repositioning, opening, closing and resizing windows. We need a REAL task-based environment.

There is a nice paper on this: http://www.mprove.de...ichi/paper.html

I am no interface expert, but the longer I work with computers, the more difficult it seems to me it is to accomplish certain tasks. We are overwhelmed with icons, buttons, windows, taskbars, widgets, scrollbars and whatnot, making it very hard to focus on work. I can understand people who are afraid to use computers. There's nothing streamlined or logical about clicking some Word icon when we need to write text file, or even hunting programs with Linux-like cryptic names.

Just some thoughts, you may agree or not.

I acknowledge that the eye candy is k3wl, but it isn't even half usable from an user's POV.

take a look at the following picture, shown @ User Experience Conference 2006.
theres a "sidebar @ the bottom of the screen paired with taskbar above!

that is where i got the idea from!

Man, I wish they made that Explorer. You can see it was pretty much a more refined look of the early designs. Which had awesome animations, views and filters. And what I liked most is that it had more power user options which you could display via clicking the expand arrows. It would of had views such as Phodeo and all the power to control WinFS.

Dam what a lose :(

I don’t think we will ever see Microsoft make something like that in reality. I think the company’s moving down a different path. With a different style/vision.
