NVidia have announced the details for their upcoming 8800-series cards, built on their new "G80" core. The 8800 is one of the first generation of DirectX 10 compatible graphics cards. The 8800 GTX and GS will be released in November 2006, and support the Shader Model 4.0. As the specs below reveal, the cards are apocalyptically powerful.

As a DirectX 10 capable card, the 8800 will give users access to graphics far better than DirectX 9, and improve performance of the DWM under Windows Vista. This is because DirectX 10 compatible cards use a new version of the Windows Device Driver Model (WDDM), which gives the operating system much more control of graphics card resources.

NVidia 8800 GTX
  • 575Mhz "G80" core
  • 768MB GDDR3 memory at 900Mhz
  • 384-bit memory bus, delivering 86GB/s memory bandwidth
  • 128 unified shaders, clocked at 1350Mhz
  • theoretical fill rate: 38.4 billion pixels per second
  • HDCP compliant
  • Length: "just under 11 inches"
  • 450W PSU required
  • SLI capable
NVidia 8800 GTS
  • 500Mhz "G80" core
  • 640MB GDDR3 memory at 900Mhz
  • 320-bit memory bus, delivering 64GB/s memory bandwidth
  • 96 unified shaders, clocked at 1200Mhz
  • HDCP compliant
  • Length: 9 inches
  • 400W PSU required
  • SLI capable

11 inches! Is this product for people who would also buy a Ferarri to compensate for other personal issues?

Any word on how much heat this produces? It is laughable how people crapped all over Prescott because of heat output yet video card manufacturers are doing the same thing. Eventually, ATI and NVIDIA are going to hit a wall and have to re-engineer and re-tool for efficient video cards.

Start raking leaves and saving your pennies, kids. November is right around the corner.

About two years ago, Nvidia made some major changes to their Geforce architecture just to reduce the heating and power requirements (i.e. shutting down parts of the GPU that weren't being used, like how CPU's have the IDLE commands i think). I suspect they have kept on in that direction. Note that the recommended PSU for the Geforce 6800 GT was a 350W PSU. Since this is a vastly more complex chip (i think it has over twice the transistor count of a Core 2 Duo) but still only requires 50 - 100 watts more than the Geforce 6800 GT.

Rumors also have it that since the cooler takes up a full slot that Nvidia will integrate Water Cooling plugs for those that wish to overclock or silence it more. Also i think these are 80nm parts (Intel and Amd are at 65nm parts).

It'll be interesting to see how Ati's DirectX 10 chip compares to this one.

If that video card is "Just Under 11 inches", I could probably cook lasagna in that thing... But I still wonder, who is going to need something that extreme? (Other than the DX10 compatibility)

According to somebody on Dailytech's comments:

8800 GTS will be $449-$499 MSRP.
8800 GTX will be $649 MSRP

650!!! Didn't Nvidia learn their lesson with the 7800GTX 512MB?

ATI will certainly produce a much cheaper board. Maybe I'll splurge on two GTS's depending on actual gains. If they don't hit at least 30% then forget it.

Do not support price gouging! Do not buy $649 video cards!

Back in the day a high end video card ran you $300.
