I was wondering what type of Features or Bundled Apps you guys would like to see in the next version of window meaning after Vista. Since Vista is pretty much feature complete we can’t expect any of these things to be included.

Heres a list of things that I would like to see,

• Paint replaced with Acrylic Express or something of that nature.

• Word Pad replaced with Word Express. And these express versions shouldn’t have any nag screens to buy the full featured versions.

• A Virtual CD/DVD Drive. Or ISO management capabilities

• A System wide Spell Checker.

• A Download Manager like what we seen in build 4015

• Ability to assign a password to a folder. So that everytime you go to open up a folder it asks for a password only.

• Advanced shutdown features that would allow you to auto shutdown when a certain task has been completed or to simply shutdown at a specified time.

• I would have love to see those Glass Toasts notifications back instead of the crap balloon pop ups.

• Actual 3D animated icons. Kind of like what we can see here. Even though that icon looks crap :) And the animated start menu icons shown at PDC 2003

• Views such as Carousel view and Phodeo.

• And if only we had the Glass version and Shell shown back at PDC 2003. here & here

• The old theme styles from the 3xxx and 4xxx builds Longhorn builds.

• The tabbed thumbnails again shown at PDC 2003

• The features and high quality look of Microsoft Max merged in with windows Photo Gallery. I DON’T see a point in making two Image Gallery type of apps.

• And an OS mode selector. Basically this would offer you a list of modes in which you could run your computer in. For example Gaming Mode. This would then only leave OS critical services running and would close down all other running tasks. So that you can use almost your entire computers power to run the game. Or an Office Productivity mode. This would then down clock your hardware to make it use less power and create less noise. Would be great for laptop users. This has actually been done by Creative for the X-Fi sound cards in which you select what mode you want the card to operate in.

•Ability to have “Surround Sound” WMP files or other media formats to be attached to the windows sound themes. I have an awesome set of surround sound speakers set up and I would like it if windows was able to use them in a more creative way.

•Explorer to Auto Refresh itself. Like Properly I mean. For example, If you copy some files into a folder they get put down the very bottom, which you have to then manually refresh to get them places back in the Alphabetical order or how ever else you have them sorted.

So what features would you guys like to see?

What I want to see is a desktop which is more a component system, so that you can add or remove things, position them where ever you want and compose new parts...

"

I believe that this can be accomplished with new task scheduler in vista..
Y can make task that runs command line for shutting down the system and put some triggers for it and/or make it to run in specified time..

Or do Y mean graphical shutdown tool for making those kind of things..
new task scheduled suits very well for my needs.. I`ve been waiting for that kind of remake..

Im sure it can be done with the new task scheduler but how simple is the question.

A toolbar command line box, so i can quickly acchieve tasks without opening dos.

Example: say i want to delete all .bmp files in a folder normally i would have to control select each one then hit delete, time consuming if there was a command line built into the window all i would have to do is type del *.bmp

Ahh awsome guys! Cheers for that. There the types of thing i want to hear.

Mousegestures would be handy. Maybe have a format all hard drives mousegestures when you shack the mouse to to side :) haha jk.

And the GPU resource monitor i think is pretty dam important. The Power Toys team better be working on this if they dont include it in Vista Final.

vista has something for that particular scenario. Filter by type, and delete all of them :)

I'd like to see:
- the dictionary built in (like OSX has. So useful)
- a WPF-based shell
- a complete system-wide media experience. Think of aurora being animated and colourised like a Windows Media Player visualisation. That would rock.
- and more, but I think reality is moderating this forum
