Regionalized Themes in Windows 7

posted on December 6, 2008 by Bryant Zadegan

Build 6956 was leaked to the public yesterday in the form of a virtual hard drive. Those who got it running probably didn’t take the time to dig deep, but our own Michael Frank took a look inside the build to see what he could find.

Right on par with some of the changes I mentioned would be coming to Windows 7, regional themes are now an option for different countries. It’s expected that more will be added as time goes on, but the five English-speaking countries currently stereotyped themed in build 6956+ are:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • South Africa
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

The themes are nothing more than color and wallpaper combinations for now. I’m assuming that the appropriate theme will be chosen depending on the location of the person installing Windows 7, but that has yet to be seen.

Beta 1 is currently in escrow, so any other remaining hidden features should also be visible by the time Beta 1 rolls around on January 13th at the MSDN Developer Conferences*. We should have more information for you guys regarding these themes down the road, but for now, feel free to check out screenshots of the five country-specific themes below:

*if any of you are attending the MSDN DevCon in Washington D.C., I’ll gladly meet up with you at the event! Just drop me a PM on the forums in advance to arrange a meeting place.

Is there a way to get the wallpaper show here maybe?

I don’t have them?
I’ve used the ISO to install but none of them exists for me.
Do i have to run this command to get them:

“Reset Windows 7 Build 6956 to Original Default State:

As the VHD is actually a running copy of Windows 7 installation on another machine,
so some settings or components such as personalization, drivers support, features support,
hardware specifications (such as ACHI) support and activation grace period has been changed or modified.
In order to restore and reset Windows 7 installation back to its original out-of-the-box experience (OOBE) state,
users can run the SysPrep command.
The command is located in C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\sysprep.exe.”

So does the Desktop Slideshow work? I see there appears to be other pictures from that region there.

@vajlent – find the “fixed ISO torrent” and your questions will be answered ;-)

@Devin – yes the slideshow and rss ‘desktop’ now works along with many other 6801 issues being fixed as well…

It’s worth noting (from the forums) that the regional wallpapers are available to everyone with build 6956 in their “C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT” [or equivalent] folder that is hidden.

Ambig said on December 7, 2008 at 7:25 pm:

The files are actually in hidden folders.

Here is where they are stored in:
H:\Windows\Globalization\MCT\

Just enable hidden folders to be seen and you’ll see each region’s theme stuff, including the wallpapers in a folder.

Here are the actual pictures:

Duplicates and all.

It’s about 25 megs. There’s about 18 unique wallpapers in all.

I do NOT like the new task bar. In theory a program is a program whether it is running or not. However, in most users minds there is still a distinction of what is running and what is not. To combine them on one bar is not only confusing, but ugly.

@ joey,

You can switch back to the old taskbar if you like
