If these “Virtual Folders” can be shared and act a bit more like folders, this will be fantastic. If not, I think it becomes about as useful as the search folders we have now.

Sounds great! I love the idea of virtual folders so I experimented with using saved searches in Vista, however I found it’s just not quite got the performance yet to be used in that way. Actually the biggest problem I have with searches is just that so much crappy file types which I’m never going to actually want to find always turn up at the top of the search =P

Hey,
“Virtual Folders” is already included in Vista with the name of “Saved searches”: Vista has the ability to save searches as a Search Folder where opening the folder will execute a specific search automatically and display the results as a normal folder. A search folder is just an XML file which stores the search query, including the search operators as well. When these files are accessed, the search is run with the saved query string and the results presented as a virtual folder.

Virtual folders was the coolest thing in Vista B1.

Too bad they killed it when they did
